Winter is almost over, and it won't be too long before the kids are begging for the opportunity to head back into the swimming pool. However, as a first-time pool owner, there are a few steps you must take before the pool is in a swimmable condition. One of the most important parts of your pool is its pump, so here are three tips to ensure that your pool pump is ready to spring into action once the temperature warms up a little more.

Check Pump Runs

One of the first things you must do to check the pool pump is switch it on. If the pump does not start, there are a couple of reasons why this might be. Firstly, check the timer and the electrical outlet to ensure both of these are switched on. If they are switched on, then take a look at the wiring to see if that has been damaged by rodents over the winter months. Try plugging another electrical device into the outlet to prove it is working. Electrical issues in pool pumps require the help of a registered electrician to resolve them.

Check For Pump Leaks

Once you turn the pool pump back on, then the next task on your list is to check the pool pump for leaks. Over the winter months, the cold temperature has caused the seals around the pipes to contract in the cold and expand during the day. This constant contraction and expansion causes cracks to appear in the seals over time. These cracks allow water to leak out when the pump is running. Leaking water is easy to detect as you will see evidence of it around the pool pump while it is running. A pool contractor can replace the pipe seals for you so that water is not wasted.

Check For Debris

There is not a lot of rain around Australia during the winter, but there certainly is plenty of wind. That wind means your skimmer basket and pool water are likely filled with all types of debris, such as leaves and branches from neighbourhood trees. All debris must be removed so that the pool pump can run efficiently. Debris clogs up the pump pipes, which makes it much harder for the pool pump to move the water through the pool. This puts a strain on the pool pump motor and also prevents the filtration system from effectively cleaning the pool water.

Considering the potential for issues to occur within a pool pump system over the winter, it is wise to have a pool contractor on hand when you start the pump back up for spring swimming. By having a professional close by, you get peace of mind that the pump is working exactly as it should be. And if you need a new pool pump, there are plenty of options out there for you to check out.
