A vinyl pool liner is a sheet of vinyl material that is installed in a pool to act as a waterproofing membrane between the water and the pool structure. Generally speaking, more and more new pool owners are installing vinyl liner pools over the traditional plaster version because it costs less and takes less time to build a vinyl pool. If you have installed a vinyl liner pool in your home, you should be aware that the vinyl in your pool does not have an unlimited lifespan. The vinyl will wear out over time and needs to be replaced in order to keep the pool structure protected from possible erosion by the water.

Here is a look at a number of issues that may indicate your vinyl liner is degraded and needs to be replaced.

Cracks and tears in the liner

As your pool liner ages, it tends to develop cracks and tears, which may be the cause of constant water loss from your pool. The cracking and tearing typically occurs due to constant exposure to the sun's UV light and chemicals used in the pool. It is a good idea to regularly inspect your pool liner, so you can keep an eye out for possible cracks and tears and observe the water levels. If the water levels drop drastically within a few days, then your pool liner may require a complete replacement.

Staining on the vinyl

Some stains are easy to remove while others are very stubborn and may never come off. Compared to pool plaster, vinyl is less prone to staining, but it can still get stained. Due to the use of pool chemicals and prolonged exposure to UV radiation, significant algae and/or rust stains may form on the vinyl over time. This can become a major cosmetic issue that can only be remedied by replacing the pool liner.

Fading of the vinyl

As a construction material, vinyl is revered for its ability to maintain its initial colours for years and years. But the pool environment may not allow vinyl to retain its original colour for as long as might be expected. Pool chemicals and constant exposure to the sun's UV rays all act against vinyl, causing it to fade or lose its original colour much faster. Vinyl pool owners who want to revive the appearance of their faded vinyl can do so by replacing their pool liners.
